Happy Mum
I'm a Mum to an 11-year-old on the Autism spectrum with complex learning difficulties.
When we started at The Riding Patch, she was unable to ask questions, voice her discomfort/fears or speak with a teacher at school or with anyone not immediately related to her. She could not self start a task and needed to be constantly refocussed and helped. This meant that she could only learn on a one on one basis. She was dramatically behind at school, unable to maintain friends and isolated from life and its experiences.
Since coming to The Riding Patch she has learnt many tasks including, discerning her left from her right, and the meanings of 'in front' and 'behind' and 'before' and 'after' . Her ability to converse with her peers and others has opened her up to a new world of playdates and fun. Her core strength and balance has improved so much that she is now able to play on all the playground equipment at school.
Her teacher, speech pathologist and Special Ed teacher have all been surprised by her significantly improved confidence and social abilities. She can now ask for help in class, self-start and doesn't need to be helped as much to complete the tasks. She has more resilience with friendship difficulties and overall is happier and healthier.
As a parent, I now have a better understanding of how my daughter works. She now engages with us and is excited when we do things together.
She has started to try more foods and new experiences. She is more inclined to spend time outside playing. She is now able to voice her fears so that we can discuss them and work on a plan together. Overall she is calmer and happier.
I'm looking forward to seeing how much more my daughter grows and changes in the coming years.
